December 3, 2020

Dear Prefects and Moderators,

Blessed Advent greetings to each of you as we watch and wait for our Lord!  I would like to share a few excerpts from Pope Francis’ homily this past First Sunday of Advent with the new 13 Cardinals, including our Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington in attendance: “The first message of Advent and the liturgical year: we need to recognize God’s closeness and say to him, “Come close to us once more!...Come Lord Jesus is the prayer that ends the Book of Revelation.  We should say it often.  If we ask Jesus to come close to us, we will train ourselves to be watchful ... Be watchful!”

Our regular general meeting, this First Saturday, December 5, 2020 starting at 9:00 am a prayer from Fr. Sass and then proceed with the Rosary.

From the Spiritual Life Committee Chair, Helen Awatefe:   As a reminder, please send your Book of the Living, aka, your Sodality Roster, and Spiritual Bouquets to our Spiritual Life Chair, Helen Awatefe.

From the Ways and Means Chair, Bernadette White: [see letter that was sent on November 13th copied below].

During the last meeting, Fr. Sass requested that any Sodality that is hosting praying the Rosary, Novenas or Morning/Evening Prayers, to please email them to me.  I have already received a few.  We will put together a list for him.  Fr. Sass may surprise you and your Sodality by participating with your during prayer time.

This Tuesday, December 8th, is the Feast day of The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Mary.  Please see the attached prayer.    I am looking forward to seeing you Saturday morning.

Yours in Jesus and Mary,
Lisa Williams, President
Sodality Union of ADW

From Ways and Means Committee Chair:

November 13, 2020

Greetings Prefects,

In response to your query on all issues surrounding our Annual James Cardinal Hickey Scholarship Raffle, this was established to further assist students obtaining a catholic education. Our donation is only a contribution added to the ADW Education Office.  The Sodality Union has maintained a consistent annual event for this raffle.  While April is normally the month of the raffle drawing, it is not specified in our Manual.  Due to the continuous Covid 19 situation, we are looking at the possibility of having the raffle drawing June 2021.

Again, I ask for the # of Raffle tickets your parish will be responsible to.  Tickets will be one dollar. One half of each ticket sold is retained for your treasury.  NO REFUNDS.  Stubs and Payment in full due 30 days before the drawing.

To facilitate the lottery process, it is my request that your response is sent via email to [Committee Chair Bernadette White].

Please use subject line for your Church name and # of tickets (or donation pledge). Your contact information placed in the body. This method will allow speedy recognition and attention to your response.

e.g.    St Gabriel dc   300 tickets or ($300.00 donation pledge)
                         Bernadette White, 202.269.0710

A response would be appreciated by December 21, 2020.

The tentative proposal is to order 10,000 tickets with approval of funding to allow the Raffle to proceed. (application-fees-legal documents, etc.).    Following the Sodality Union Executive Board approval and DC Lottery approval of tickets that can be ordered, will be made available.

Words shared by Sodalist Lynn Hill:  It’s exciting that so many of you have accepted the opportunity to be consecrated to Mary.  As Sodalists we recognize that the surest way to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is through His Immaculate Mother.  Father Michael Gaitley’s “33 Days to Morning Glory” is a wonderful book . . . .

Father Gaitley calls his updated and simple book “a Marian consecration for the Third Millennium.  Each week the book focuses on a different saint who lived and wrote about his/her devotion to Mary.  On your journey to Jesus through Mary, you’ll read and ponder messages from St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximillan Kolbe, Blessed Mother Teresa, and St. Pope John Paul II.  The last five days contain a review of the writings.

The  Month of MARY

We thank our May host parishes St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Holy Angels Catholic Church for the beautiful Crowning of Mary and the warm southern Maryland welcome!

This year's Lenten journey we were inspired by the words we received from Father Sass at the Retreat to go forth with courage--beyond the retreat--and ask ourselves, "what is the cross in my life?"  We are to make time the remainder of this Lenten season to contemplate this so that when we kiss the cross on Good Friday, we may have clarity of that cross.  "Yes, I am afraid of this cross," but with complete trust we will turn to our merciful and gracious Lord who will take us out of this fear of the cross on Easter Sunday!  Yes, I believe in the Resurrection!  Father's resounding closing words at the retreat:  GOD LOVES YOU!

At the March General Meeting at Nativity Catholic Church we were blessed with a warm, vibrant and spiritually rich talk by our guest speaker Carol Monaco of Our Lady of Bethesda and Editor/Writer of Journey to Our Lady in publication for over ten years.  We thank Carol with our prayerful gratitude for sharing a written copy of her presentation available below.  As we approach the 100th Anniversary of Fatima's first apparition, Carol opened our hearts, inviting us with her words, to like Mary. embrace "all that Our Lady holds dear--God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit," and reminding us that "our mission" is to pray and do good works for the rest of our lives."  Enjoy!

Also in March, it was a weekend of blessings for all who attended this year's Lenten Retreat at the Washington Retreat House, with Fr. Pawel Sass, Retreat Master.  It was a special time of friendship, prayer, Reconciliation, and Eucharistic celebration.
